ILLNESS: CHLORINE INTOXICATION

chloramine intoxication

Other names: None

Type of disesase: Chlorine intoxication is not a disease. It is actually a water quality issue.

Causes: From chlorine contained in new water.

Symptoms: Flashing. Gasping. Rapid breathing. Red gills. Pale body colour. Body may appear rough and irritated. Fish usually die with gills wide open.

Medication:
Perform heavy water changes to remove chlorine. Water conditioners such as Chloradsorb may be added directly to aquarium.

Additional information:
Never use conditioners that only remove Chlorine. Chloramine is formed through the reaction of dissolved chlorine gas and ammonia in tap water. To use a Chlorine remover would disassociate the Chloramine molecule, and cause a rapid spike in Ammonia levels.

Prevention tips:
1) Treat tap water with water a chlorine remover before to do a water change.
2) Let tap water to sit for 48 hours before to do a water change (An airstone will help accelerate the process).
