ILLNESS: CHLORAMINE INTOXICATION

chloramine intoxication

Other names: None

Type of disesase: Chloramine intoxication is not a disease. It is actually a water quality issue.

Causes: From chlorine contained in new water.

Symptoms: Flashing. Gasping. Rapid breathing. Red gills. Pale body colour. Body may appear rough and irritated. Fish usually die with gills wide open.

Medication:
Perform large water changes to remove chloramine (Repeatethe next day). Water conditioners such as Chloradsorb may be added directly to aquarium or can be use to remove both chlorine and ammonia from tap water before to perform water changes.

Additional information:
Never use conditioners that only remove Chlorine. Chloramine is formed through the reaction of dissolved chlorine gas and ammonia in tap water. To use a Chlorine remover would disassociate the Chloramine molecule, and cause a rapid spike in Ammonia levels.
