ILLNESS: ACIDOSIS

image Acidosis

Other names: None

Type of disesase: Acidosis is not a disease. It is actually a water quality issue.

Causes: Low pH levels (below 5.5)

Symptoms: Excess mucous, inflammation of the skin, and erosion of the gills. Affected fish dart about the tank and will often jump out of the water. Respiration increases, and the fish may be observed at the surface of the water gasping for air.

Medication:
Immediate water change (at least 50%). New water should be added slowly to allow the fish time to adjust to the new pH value. Removal of any pH altering substances. Provide vigorous surface aeration. Daily pH verification and water changes should be performed until the situation stabilizes. Note: Low pH could be due to overcrowding causing too much carbon dioxide (Co2) in the water (Co2 has an acidifying affect on the water). If you use Co2 for plants grow, remember that this will also lower pH.
